In April 2024, Professor Lyu Yue was invited to the "Jingda Forum" hosted by the School of Economics at Hangzhou Dianzi University, where she delivered an academic lecture titled "Dual E-commerce Platforms and Chinese Enterprise Exports."
Professor Lyu first introduced the literature on e-commerce and trade costs, e-commerce and exports, multi-host behavior, and the mechanisms involved. Then, based on Melitz’s (2003) heterogeneous trade theory framework, she established a theoretical model to describe enterprise choices between dual e-commerce platforms, international platforms, and domestic platforms, setting up an econometric model to explore the impact of joining dual e-commerce platforms on enterprise exports. Utilizing web scraping technology, she obtained data from 1688 and international stations, organizing this data to match it with the China Customs database from 2002 to 2019.
The research findings revealed: (1) Both domestic e-commerce platforms and cross-border platforms significantly promote enterprise export growth, with the growth from dual platforms being notably higher than from single platforms, demonstrating the export promotion effect as "dual e-commerce platform > international station > 1688"; (2) Mechanism analysis indicated that scale effects and intermediate goods effects are two main channels through which e-commerce platform participation affects enterprise exports, with these effects being more pronounced for firms using dual platforms; (3) Heterogeneity analysis found that enterprises located in central and western regions, as well as local firms, can leverage e-commerce platforms for greater export growth.
After the lecture, Professor Lyu shared her academic experiences, presenting the latest research dynamics and methodologies in international economics and trade. She provided specific suggestions for young faculty members on selecting topics for national social science applications and submitting papers. The academic atmosphere was vibrant, with rich content throughout the lecture. During the Q&A session, Professor Lyu interacted with attendees, addressing their questions one by one. Finally, Vice Dean Xue Jie expressed sincere gratitude for Professor Lyu's insightful report, and the lecture concluded to warm applause.
