In August 2024, Professor Lyu Yue, the director of the laboratory, was invited to participate in the conference and joined the roundtable discussion on "Geopolitical Tensions and the Future of Global Value Chains." The conference featured attendance from Zhang Xiangchen, Deputy Director-General of the World Trade Organization; Wei Shangjin, Professor at Columbia University and former Chief Economist at the Asian Development Bank; Zhao Zhongxiu, President of the University of International Business and Economics; Robert Koopman, Professor at American University; and Deng Xiwei, Professor at the University of Hong Kong.
On August 9, 2024, Professor Lyu Yue, Executive Dean of the Academy of Global Innovation and Governance , was invited to the conference and attended the roundtable discussion"Reconstruction of Global Value Chain Activities: Impacts of Geopolitical Tensions and the Rise of Protectionism and the International Conference Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the Global Value Chain Workshop at the University of International Business and Economics" This conference is part of the "2024 Global Value Chain Workshop" series, which focuses on the forefront and hotspots of global value chain research and aims to establish a high-level academic sharing platform.
During the conference, President Zhao Zhongxiu delivered an opening speech, reviewing the ten-year development of the workshop and affirming its important role while expressing hopes for future development. Deputy Director-General Zhang Xiangchen gave a keynote speech on "Geopolitical Tensions and thReconstruction of Global Supply Chains," discussing the WTO's reform and development direction.
Moderated by Professor Wei Shangjin from Columbia University, the roundtable discussion featured Zhang Xiangchen, Zhao Zhongxiu, Warwick McKibbin from the Australian National University, Deng Xiwei, and Lyu Yue, who all shared insights on "Geopolitical Tensions and the Future of Global Value Chains." Lyu Yue noted that in the current geopolitical context, the effects of supply chain measures from the U.S. and Europe against China have begun to emerge, yet countries worldwide have not reduced their dependence on China. She proposed strengthening assessments to respond to the complex and changing political environment and to develop strategies for mitigating geopolitical risks.
